Had a conversation about “Hip-Hop Dance” - B-boying is the original Hip-Hop dance, I’m a firm believer in that..and I don’t agree with people calling themselves hip-hop dancers because they take some choreography classes that are called “hip-hop” classes, yet they’re not even teaching choreography to hip-hop music and/or they lack knowledge of what hip-hop is at all.
Before becoming a part of AOV I had a very ignorant attitude towards most or even all choreo crews/shows etc. because I felt a lot of them were toys, or puppets-not real dancers.. imitating, some times even straight up biting/copying what real dancer’s have created. But after having been in that part of that scene it opened my mind, I still feel that a lot of people that are in these choreo crews aren’t real dancers unless they are the ones doing the creating or choreographing, even then I feel like those people aren’t real dancers because they don’t have any knowledge of what they are doing. Especially for the “break dancers” that are in most of these crews, they don’t go to jams, get down in cyphers, or even know what to do when they get called out by a real B-boy. The same goes for the folks in choreo crews using popping moves-tutting, waves, finger tutting, etc. AOV’s original plan when we first came together was to bridge the gap between freestyle dance and choreography-in a short matter of time AOV has accomplished a lot and made a lot of noise in both freestyling and choreography. Only thing that I wish and hope for is that these other choreography/new school dancers would be just as open minded and take the time to learn where these styles of dance, that they are using, came from.
After watching some video interviews of Buddha Stretch, there are some thing’s that I agree with and some things I disagree with. But every body will have their own opinion on this topic, as I have myself.. Most of what I agree with what Buddha has to say about it is YES be open minded towards what’s new - but for the new generation calling themselves “HIP-HOP DANCERS” they should learn the history and know where it came from and what it started as.
This is one of the many videos that Buddha Stretch has been interviewed and broke it all down. I chose this one particularly because he get’s more in depth with it and it’s a 3 part video.
